Sport Preparation is the integrated process of physical, technical, tactical, and psychological development for competitive sporting success.

An understanding of the contributive factors to elite sport performance tells us that it is not merely about increasing strength numbers, running faster top speeds, or having higher conditioning test outputs; it is more complex than that.

Athletes need to be able to:

  1. Take their physical tools and apply them to sport-specific techniques
  2. Utilize those specific techniques within the parameters of a coordinated tactical strategy
  3. Execute that tactical model under the psychological pressures of competition

The best avenue for improving all of those areas? Practicing and competing in the sport itself.

Practices and competitions do not occur in a vacuum though; there is a physical cost associated with playing the sport, that cost is just a more specific physical stressor to the body than what we oversee as performance/medical staff during training.

Given that we as performance/medical staff (should) have robust knowledge on how to strategically apply and manage physical stressors on athletes, we should want to seek to help coaches plan the physical demands of the most specific preparatory stressor the athletes will be exposed to during the most critical time of year, so that we can help

  • Optimize readiness to perform in competition
  • Improve sport-specific physical/technical/tactical adaptations
  • Minimize injury risk due to mismanagement of workload

In this 90 minute presentation shared at the 2024 Move The Needle Symposium, Scott Kuehn discusses how to do just that, including:

  1. Why sport preparation matters
  2. What principles and considerations to think about as you build sport preparation systems that are optimal for your sport and organization
  3. Case studies demonstrating how to apply those principles and considerations from his career, which led to

Significant improvements in game competitiveness

83% reductions in in-season injury incidences

65% increases in high intensity outputs in practices

among other significant improvements in outcomes beneficial to competitive success
